WHAT IS REIKI?
INTRODUCTION
Reiki (ray-key) is Japanese for 'universal life energy' and is the name given to the practice of natural healing founded by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. The practice evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication.
We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all livings things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us, and we experience a sense of well being.
There are many variations of Reiki, but in essence Reiki helps to bring us into balance and reinforces the body's natural ability to heal itself at all levels, whether physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system.
Using Reiki is a healing process that anyone can benefit from in the normal course of their life. Reiki is known to support and enhance other forms of conventional or complementary treatment and often helps to alleviate side effects of medication as well as provide emotional support during recovery.
The practice is taught by Reiki masters/teachers who have trained in the tradition passed on in person from master to student.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A REIKI SESSION?
The method of receiving Reiki is as follows. The recipient remains clothed and lies on a treatment table or sits in a chair and relaxes. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively, on or near the client's body. The hand positions often follow the person's chakras or energy centres from their head down to their feet. There is no massage or manipulation and the whole person is treated rather than specific symptoms. It is also possible to receive Reiki at a distance. Sessions can take 45 minutes to an hour and a half depending on your needs and which type of session you book.
I offer intuitive and distance reiki which follow the original method by Dr Mikao Usui utilising the Tenohira hand positions. They begin with the opening of the 3rd eye chakra before the crown, so that the crown chakra can open more easily, before I proceed to scan your body and sense where the priorty issues for clearing are.
Clearing long standing issues can take a number of sessions. Reiki works through different aspects of your energy system - your aura, chakras and meridians - and physical body, and is a process. However many sessions you decide to have, and this is always your choice, Reiki will go where it's needed most, and treats the priority issue for healing each time.
Reiki practitioners who are not medically trained will not offer any diagnosis or prognosis. If you are concerned about symptoms it is recommended you see a doctor.
WHAT DOES REIKI FEEL LIKE?
Each person experiences Reiki differently depending on their individual need at the time. Reiki can only flow with your permission. Its benefits are generally greatest when you are open and willing to receive it.
You may or may not feel sensations during a Reiki session. Benefits reported by recipients include deep relaxation promoting a calm, peaceful sense of well being on all levels. Some people feel sensations of heat, tingling, or experience seeing colours with their eyes closed; whilst others can have a physical or emotional response, possibly indicating that shifts are taking place, allowing healing to begin and harmony to be restored.
WHAT DOES REIKI DO?
Many clients notice a tangible improvement in their energy levels and general sense of well being and relaxation after receiving Reiki. Some may not notice feeling any different.
It can help you feel more grounded at particularly stressful times.
WHAT CAN REIKI HELP WITH?
For stress, stress related conditions, balancing the effects of hormones, tension and fatigue the calming nature of Reiki can be very helpful.
Emotional problems such as anger, grief, anxiety, depression and fear usually respond very well to Reiki. Because of this, Reiki sessions have been shown to be very helpful and soothing in cases of drug or alcohol dependency, especially in conjunction with the appropriate counselling.
For accidents, operations and trauma Reiki supports the body's natural healing processes and can help speed up recovery times.
In the UK, the NHS now employs Reiki practitioners in some places. There is a pilot at St George's Hospital Trust in London to monitor the effects of Reiki on trauma patients.
During pregnancy, Reiki can help ease tensions in the body and facilitates relaxation for the client.
Children usually respond very quickly to Reiki and tend to have shorter session times than adults.
Reiki is widely offered to Palliative Care patients in hospices as it can be of great comfort at end of life transitions, tending to enhance the quality of life for the person in the time left, as well as promote a sense of peace and acceptance.
WHAT AFTER CARE ADVICE DO YOU GIVE?
After a Reiki session you may feel a little light headed. Drinking water will help you re-ground yourself after a treatment and feel more present again. Please make sure you sit in your car for a few minutes afterwards if you have driven to the session, to ensure you are ready to go back out onto the road.
After your session you will feel relaxed but potentially a little off centre for a short time. This is normal as the Reiki energy works through you and continues to do so for the next 24-48 hours. Do rest and try to take it easy the evening of your treatment.
It is advisable to drink plenty of water during this time and avoid alcohol, caffeine, smoking, sugar and greasy food to encourage the flushing out of toxins, enabling you to get the most from your session.
You may experience some emotional ups and downs, tears, tiredness, a slight headache, upset tummy or other aches and pains. This too is quite normal and temporary, and is a positive sign that you are releasing toxins, energy blockages and anything that no longer serves you.
If you experience an upset tummy or loose stools following your Reiki session, it is recommended to let nature run its course. Keep hydrated and maintain your electrolyte levels with oral rehydration powders if necessary. Refer to the nhs.uk website for further advice if these symptoms do not settle - it is unlikely to be due to the effects of Reiki.
Please note, in my experience clients with long standing chronic conditions or deeply embedded emotional issues can often take longer to clear any after effects, approximately 3-5 days.
I would encourage you to contact me if you are at all worried about any effects that you may experience after a session, however, please do consult your GP or seek medical assistance if any symptoms persist for longer than 3 days or are of concern to you. Reiki is not, in any way, deemed to be medical or replace any medical assistance.
